My husband an I recently got to stay a a great hotel in Downtown Milwaukee called The Intercontinental (you can read my full review here). While we were there we decided to splurge and order room service for breakfast just so that we wouldn’t have to get out of bed. My husband ordered a bananas foster french toast and it was TO DIE FOR! So I decided that I needed to give it a whirl!
Ok now I have to start by saying that this is in NO way shape or form to be considered a diet food! I mean it!
Ingredients:
FRENCH TOAST
Four slices of thick cut bread (I like mine about 1.5 inches thick)
2 eggs beaten
2/3 cup milk
1 Tablespoon Cinnamon
BANANAS FOSTER
1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
1 cup brown sugar firmly packed
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 banana sliced (plus a little to garnish)
1/4 cup pecans or walnuts
3 oz dark rum
a dash of cinnamon
How to:
FRENCH TOAST
I suggest making the french toast first and allowing it to sit in a warm oven while you make the bananas foster.
-Start by mixing beating your eggs, milk, and cinnamon together.
-Add your bread to the mixture and let it soak for about 1 minute on each side until it is nice and saturated with the egg mixture.
-Melt a small amount of butter in a pan and cook your french toast for about 4 minutes a side over medium low heat or until nicely browned on each side.
-Move the french toast to a sheet pan and place in a 200 degree oven while you prepare the bananas foster.
BANANAS FOSTER
-Start by melting your butter in a large skillet.
-Once your butter is melted whisk in your brown sugar.
-Cook the sugar and butter mixture over medium heat until all of the sugar is dissolved and it starts to bubble. Then slowly whisk in your heavy cream.
-Cook the mixture for about 2-3 minutes until it tightens up slightly then add your bananas and nut of choice.
*this is where the fun begins!*
- Add your rum, then tip the pan back towards the flame slightly to allow the fumes from the rum to catch fire (you could also use a torch lighter)
-Allow the mixture to cook for another minute over a low flame and you are ready to serve! This would also be delicious over ice cream!
