When Good Food Leaves a Bad Taste

I was very excited when we moved to the south, I knew that there would be an abundance of Chick-Fil-A restaurants around for me to enjoy!   I LOVE Chick-Fil-A, well I loved them up until about 10 minutes ago.

I don’t normally talk about religion or politics here as I don’t have very many “strong” opinions on most topics that surround them.  I was born and raised a Catholic girl and my children are being raised the same way.  I do however feel saddened that in a country where we pride ourselves in all of the freedoms and liberties that we are allowed to have that a restaurant would speak out so negatively about the right of gay couples to get married.

Chick-fil-A is “very much supportive of the family,” Dan Cathy, president of the popular fast-food chain, said in an interview with Baptist Press. That is, “the biblical definition of the family unit,” he said.

What makes a family with two moms or two dads any less of a family?  Because the bible said it was wrong? Well the bible also said it was wrong to cut your hair at your temples yet, we find it perfectly acceptable to walk into a Salon on a regular basis and get our sideburns trimmed (well the men do).  I know that Chik-Fil-A is built on Christian values, but so am I.  Just because I believe in God, and was not born a homosexual, does not mean that I should not respect others and the way that they chose live their lives.  I have always said that if my kids grow up and forget everything that I have tried to teach them in life, the one thing that I hope they will hold on to is respect for their fellow man, whether they be gay, straight, black, white, or purple!  They are all people, they all have feelings and they ALL deserve our respect!  Cathy was also quoted saying

“I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about.”

To which my only response can be, who gives you the right to judge.  Last time I checked we are judged by God and no one else.  When I find my way to Heaven some day it will be God that I stand in front of, NOT you!

And Mr Cathy, I will PROUDLY proclaim that I have the audacity to say, I will NOT eat at Chick-Fil-A until I know that ALL families, regardless of sexual preference are welcome!

I have had the honor and privledge of making many great friends in my blogging world.  One of which has been a GREAT support to me and one I’m sure many of you know!  Sadie of Slap Dash Mom and her FAMILY are a perfect example of what a family should be!  Loving adults and fun and happy children!

If you feel the same then I urge you to do the same, and spread the word by sharing this article on facebook and twitter and with all of your friends!

  1. I have never been to a Chick-fil-A and I sure as heck won’t be now. I am in full support of boycotting them. Thank you for the post!

  2. I don’t eat at Chick-Fil-A because of their disgusting food practices (watch Food Inc to see what I mean), but now I have another reason to stay away. Thanks for the post and info!

  3. My sister-in-law was just telling me about this. This is just crazy. The company owner is really stepping out of line. I feel that they are going to loose a lot of business and if they do, he should know where the blame should be. I rarely eat there and I definitely wouldn’t eat there after this.

It is wrong because the Bible says a marriage is only between a man and a woman and it’s says that a man & man or woman & woman relationship is an obamanation in the eyes of God. The verse you are referring to About not cutting our hair and wearing wool & cotton at the same times are both from the old testament- and because Jesus came and took our place so that we could be saved those rules no longer apply. I find it funny that you say we live in a world where anyone is free to speak their opinion but your turning around and saying that the restaurant does not have the same right.

  5. We don’t have a Chik Fil A near me. I will boycott businesses that don’t support beliefs that I think are important.

  7. I have already boycotted them because when I eat there I have a allergic reaction. AND it isn’t my normal hives and swelling… it’s an abrubt attitude change. I get angry, and mad at everyone and everything and I scream the rest of the day at anyone for anything. I know that seems odd but it’s happened every single time. So I really can’t eat there.
I have known to be sensitive to things (did I mention the time I unknowingly predicted a house would blow up and then it did less than 24 hours later?), but I thought I got angry from something in the food…. but it isn’t the food it’s the PREJUDICE!

I will not spend my money in a place that turns around and uses it to prevent something I have no problem with. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and how to spend their money. Mr Cathy chooses to use his to prevent Gay Marriage which he is entitled to do and he is entitled to his opinion. I am also entitled to my opinion and how to spend my money. I choose not to spend my money at Chick-fil-A. Nothing against him or his company I just don’t want my money to help him supress the rights of others.

  11. Yikes! I haven’t heard of this but I am guessing they are going to lose customers over that statement.

  13. Well said, Cristina!!! I was raised in the church too, and was always taught that our God was about love.

  14. I don’t have a lot to say on the matter here as it is a huge controversy among many. All I can say is that I don’t think Chick Fil A was being judgmental by making that statement. They were just stating their belief and we all have a right to do. I believe it is just a difference of opinion. To me, it doesn’t make their food any different. I may not agree with drinking alcohol for example, but I will still hang out with friends who may, or even eat their food.

  16. Just as you have a right to voice your opinion, so do I. Boycott Chik because they stated their opinion, I really don’t care. But I also have the same right to suppot them and agree totally with what they believe in. I believe marriage is between a man and a woman.

    • Cristina says:

No I am boycotting Chick-Fil-A because they contribute money to organizations that fight against equal rights and I feel that we should all have the same opportunities no matter what! But that is my choice and very well may not be yours. And that is just fine.

  17. UGH. Seriously?
OK. People. To call yourselves REAL Christians, don’t you think loving everyone as your brother or sister is the way to go? Who cares if they are Gay. They are people just like us. LEAVE THE JUDGING TO GOD! HE is the one and ONLY TRUE GOD AND JUDGE OF US ALL! Who are WE to say what sin is worse? Sin A or Sin B? Really? That’s God’s job. Leave him have it. To take that away from him, in my eyes, is a sin. I am a heterosexual woman, happily married to a man and I sin daily. I let swear words slip. I am selfish with my time. I don’t tithe as much as I should. I lie. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US sins. I don’t care if you can sit here and say…Oh, no I don’t sin. Bull crud. You DO sin. Everyone does. If you have thoughts of wanting something your neighbor has? THAT is a sin. That is coveting what someone else has.
Yes, a man with a man and a woman with a woman IS stated as a sin in the bible, but again… leave the judging to God. Do I believe there are homosexuals in heaven? Heck yea! Just like I believe that God has a place for me, in heaven. I am a sinner. My sin isn’t homosexuality, but dang, I wish I had a better car like my sister… Oh, I sinned. See what I mean? Everyone sins. Sin is Sin. God sent his one and only son, Jesus, to die for our sins. On judgment day, will it be Chick-Fil-A at the “pearly gates” handing down judgment? LOL…. no. Ridiculous, right?

Sorry…I kinda went off on a soap box there and didn’t mean to. We are all people. Why can’t we just love each other, be kind to one another? I am a Christian and I really, really try. Just because my cousins, my friends or even my OWN daughter may be gay doesn’t mean I am EVER EVER going to love them less. Do you REALLY think that is what God would want? To shun his children?
    I don’t think so.

  18. I’m not sure I understand. Has Chick-fil-A attempted to ban gay couples (with/without children from patronizing their restaurants?

Near as I can tell from the article, all the guy did was express an opinion based on what he believes to be true about the world. Big deal. Reasonable people can agree to disagree.

Personally, I think we should just kick the government out of the marriage licensing racket entirely, then this whole messy business could just go away. As for Chick-fil-A, they could support the NDAA for all I care. Their milkshakes and waffle fries are flipping’ amazing!

  19. Good for you! We don’t have a chick-fil-a in our area, but I will never go to one now. I feel we should always speak with our dollar — we can control where our money goes!

  20. Nessie-lou says:

Its a sad day when someone can’t express a personal opinion that differs from the “popular” opinion. Isn’t freedom of speech held dearly in the US? This man’s views have nothing to do with how same-sex couples are treated in their stores – there isn’t a quiz taken before an order is. It is possible to disagree with a lifestyle while still loving someone. As for having the ‘audacity’ to define what marriage is about – if you don’t define it, then what on earth is it? It must be defined to some degree, otherwise eating a hotdog, going to an amusement park, or shaking hands with someone on the street could be ‘marriage’.

You want to make the world a better place – great! I may not agree with your definition of better, but you have every right to advocate for it. But don’t make the same mistake as they did in the 20th century. Same-sex oriented people were unable to express themselves and their wishes publicly, and worse. Now, more and more, those who don’t agree with same-sex marriage are unable to express their opinions without being viciously attacked. Is substituting one group for persecution for another improving society? Be better than the wrongdoings of the past.

    • Cristina says:

I am not bashing him for speaking his mind. I am simple letting him know that because of the way his company is choosing to spend my money, I will no longer be bringing my money there…
