Preemie Car Seat Safety

It didn’t happen like you had planned.  You were quite prepared for it but none the less your sweet little baby is now here and in your arms, even if it was 5 weeks early!  You have spent the last 4 weeks loving and crying and just being close to your little baby and they are doing great!  Ready to go home in fact.  Except for one little problem.  Your little peanut is just too small for a standard infant car seat and the hospital says you need to stay.

That is where the AngelGuard Infant Car Bed and Preemie seat comes in.  Because of some of the troubles that small babies, especially premature babies have in the early parts of their life it is very important that not only the correct car seat be used but that the babies tolerance of the car seat be assessed as well.  Before leaving the hospital be sure that the staff monitors your little one in their car seat to check for any adverse reactions to being placed inside of it.

Car Seat

Most infant car seats are are designed for babies 7lbs or greater.  If your little one is only 4lbs they are not going to fit safely or snuggly in their new car seat.  Having the ability to allow your child to lay down in a car seat like the one above, allows you to get a nice snug fit and allows the your small baby to not have to try and remain in an upright position that is a bad fit for him.

While I have never had a pre-mature baby, I have plenty of friends who have come home with little ones well under weight, and knowing the things that they don’t teach you in the standard baby classes can really make a world of difference.  I can only imagine that the last thing you want to do when you have a new baby waiting on you at the hospital is spend time researching online but the right car seat could be the difference between 2 more weeks in the hospital or some great bonding and snuggle time at home!

  1. That’s really neat. I haven’t seen one of these before. In the past I’ve always recommended the Chicco Keyfit 30 or the Britax B-Safe for preemie’s. They have a 4 pound minimum. I’m going to have to a little more research on this one. I can definitely see the appeal.

    Thanks for the information!
